Healthcare company committed to charity

Prospective students of healthcare management MBA programs may wonder what types of charitable contributions companies in this industry make.

For instance, Baxter International Incorporated develops, manufactures and markets life-sustaining products through its subsidiaries. The organization's philanthropic arm, The Baxter International Foundation, recently announced that its combined charitable giving for 2010 totaled nearly $80 million.

Baxter's employees also reported more than 163,000 hours of volunteer work within their communities. Among the events these individuals organized and participated in were food drives and Habitat for Humanity.

The foundation's financial giving was in line with their expertise in healthcare. Funds went toward increasing access to care, assisting developing nations and other global needs.

A total of $48.1 million in donations, which came from donor partners and U.S. patient assistance programs, went toward 84 countries in need, according to foundation officials. Haiti was among these nations, receiving nearly 250,000 intravenous solutions and sets.

In addition, $27.2 million in revenue from Baxter's business and facilities went toward finding solutions to local problems in more than 37 countries.
