Apex makes going green more affordable

As more cities call on their businesses to implement sustainable practices, the knowledge that an individual can obtain from a green MBA program may prove useful.

For instance, the city of Philadelphia's Water Department (PWD) has asked area businesses to help pay for the cost of managing stormwater runoff. Companies that do not wish to pay a fee have the option of capturing and retaining the rain water, or treating it before it enters the sewer system.

According to officials from Apex Companies, a provider of environmental and engineering-related services, when runoff is properly managed there are a number of benefits. These include better water quality, lower wastewater treatment costs and the ability to reuse stormwater for new purposes.

Since there are ways for city businesses to reduce their fees, Apex is helping its clients lower their stormwater expenses.

"An immediate fee reduction is available to PWD customers that currently do not discharge to the city stormwater system," said Dennis Shelly of Apex's Pennsylvania office.

Shelly added that Apex has been able to save three of its industrial and commercial clients more than $60,000 in first-year fees.
